I’ve always loved movies. In my childhood, animated movies held a special place in my heart, and transitioning into adulthood, that passion evolved into an admiration for voice actors. I would quote my favorite lines in the characters’ voices, but recently I stumbled upon a tool that I’ve been using a great deal whenever I’m on the computer.

Voice.ai is an AI voice generator software that is capable of both pre-processed and real-time voice modulation. I’ve been able to perfectly mimic Jigsaw’s “I want to play a game” during voice calls with friends, or Vader’s iconic “No, I’m your father”.

It’s surprisingly intuitive, a feature not commonly found in applications that interact with your microphone and speakers. Both a desktop application and a phone app exist. But we will only discuss the desktop application in this article.

Features of Voice.ai

It is a fascinating voice modification technology that functions in two major operating modes. Pre-processed and Live. In the former, you choose a voice from the community hub and select an audio file; after a brief processing, you get the original audio file spoken by your selected voice.

I prefer the Live mode: it’s where I have the most fun. Although this can be challenging for older and non-GPU computers to handle, it converts your voice into another one in real time. So you can have the pitch and timber of Morgan Freeman’s voice.

How to Use Voice.ai

The greatest selling point is Voice.ai’s use of a community system. You accrue credits based on your contributions to the community, then you can take on a voice changer that the community created. The way it works is that you allow Voice.ai to utilize your computer for the training of other voices. For instance, if you wanted Morgan Freeman’s voice while someone else desired Taylor Swift’s voice, it would be achieved through communal trade.

You may not have Taylor Swift’s voice ready to go, but you would permit Voice.ai to use your computer to train an AI voice changer to emulate Taylor Swift. You earn credit based on how much you contribute to the community, and use that credit to purchase a voice.

Getting Started

You can download the software from the Voice.ai website and proceed with its basic installation. You will need to sign up for an account as well, Once that’s done, you will be faced with a UI with three circles. At the top, you should toggle between “Record Mode” and “Live Mode”.

Record Mode allows you to upload an audio file from your computer, allow it to process, and then provide a playable output. The live mode requires some setting adjustments but that’s the mode that allows you to pull fun pranks on friends. Also, pay no heed to the fact that I was testing an anime girl’s voice, it means nothing.

Selecting The Voice Change

The central circle allows you to go into the Voice.ai Community, where you can choose from various options. The best part about the app is that the community drives the content. A user, such as yourself, contributes to the growing number of available voice changes. I’ll cover how to do that yourself in another article, but for now, simply choose the voice you want to use, “train” it, and you’re good to go!

Acquiring credits for training voices is straightforward. You can either purchase them, or earn them for free. The most popular method is to allow Voice.ai to use your computer’s GPU making it available for training. This implies that other users can use your GPU to train their voices, and consequently, your hardware becomes a valuable contribution to the community.

Think of it as renting out your GPU.
